September 10, 2009 Founding partner, Richard J. Dodson, was named 2009-2010 President-Elect of the Louisiana Association for Justice at the Association's annual meeting. Mr. Dodson will work with the current LAJ President and become President of the Association in September of 2010. The Louisiana Association for Justice is comprised of plaintiff and defense attorneys from throughout Louisiana who advocate for workplace justice, fairness in the courts and work to uphold the honor and dignity of the civil justice system and legal profession in Louisiana. Mr. Dodson will also be representing the association at the American Association for Justice's bi-annual winter meeting in Maui, Hawaii. August 2009 The firm was retained to represent the Elmer family against the State of Louisiana. The Elmers purchased and have possessed "Elmer's Island", a 3 mile private stretch of gulf front sand beach, for more than 30 years. For years the family charged a nominal fee for individuals to use the area for camping, fishing and general recreation until one of the family members drowned in an automobile accident on the road leading to the beach. Thereafter, the gates to the beach access road were locked. On July 4, 2009, without prior notice to the family, the State of Louisiana cut the locks and allowed public access to the road and private beach. The family seeks to be placed back into peaceful possession of their land. The case is pending in the 19th Judicial District Court in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. April 2009 The firm was retained to represent the interests of those injured and killed as a result of the explosion and sinking of the M/V Supe off the coast of Peru. Several people were killed and many were seriously burned and injured in the incident. The United States publically traded company BPZ Energy, Inc. is alleged to be responsible for the incident. The case is pending in state district court in Houston, Texas. February 2009 The firm was retained to represent the interests of the family of the construction foreman killed, and represent the other workers who were injured, in an industrial accident where a portion of the I-10 Twin Span Bridge collapsed. The Twin Spans crosses Lake Pontchartrain and connects New Orleans to St. Tammany Parish. The case is pending in the Civil District Court for the Parish of Orleans. January 2009 National class action attorney H. Price Mounger became affiliated with the firm. Price brings over 20 years of legal experience to the firm's international practice in environmental, toxic tort, product liability and personal injury litigation. 08-28-06 Kenny Hooks appointed Adjunct Law Professor at Southern University Law Center Attorney Kenny Hooks, partner with Dodson, Hooks and Frederick, was appointed to replace the position of Adjunct Law Professor left vacant when partner Jerry Dodson retired from the position after nearly thirty years of service. To rid the Ascension Parish community of the putrid odors emanating from the dump owned by D&J Fill, Inc. 03-25-04 Suit alleges Foreign Seaman Cheated Out of Wages by New Jersey Company Attorney Richard (Jerry) Dodson, along with New York Attorney, Ralph J. Mellusi, brought a class action lawsuit for unpaid wages of 209 foreign seaman who were illegally employed on board United States flagged vessels in violation of the Jones Act. Despite strenuous defense objections, a Federal Judge in Brooklyn granted class certification to the Polish and Filipino seamen finding that the putative class members claims rely on common legal theories arising from a common nucleus of facts. Based upon this ruling, Mr. Dodson and Mr. Mellusi are preparing for a trial on the merits which is planned for Summer 2008.
