Kenny Hooks is appointed to Plaintiffs' Discovery Committee for BP Oil Spill

Partner, Kenny Hooks has been appointed to a Plaintiffs' Discovery Committee for the BP Oil Spill to help coordinate pre-trial discovery on behalf of all plaintiffs whose cases are consolidated within the multi-district litigation of what will be one of the largest mass torts in history. In the months after BP's "Deepwater Horizon" oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, triggering the largest oil spill in U.S. history, more than 300 cases have been filed in federal court by victims in each of the affected states.

Mr. Hooks was among a group of both national and top Louisiana speakers participating in a review of Louisiana law with a presentation entitled "Immunities: How Many Does Louisiana Need?"

Kenny Hooks is a Key Presenter at International Congress of Maritime and Admiralty Law

Law Firm NewsAt the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey through the Center for Strategic Research and the Marmara University Faculty of Law, Kenny Hooks traveled to Istanbul to present at the International Congress of Maritime and Admiralty Law. His speech was entitled "United States Law: Choice of Law and Choice of Forum." The Center for Strategic Research was established to conduct research on international relations and regional studies, examine international conflicts, make scholarly and scientific assessments of relevant issues and review Turkish foreign policy with a futuristic perspective. It is a consultative body with the responsibility of bringing to the attention of decision makers independent, unbiased views and findings from different sources throughout the world.

Jerry Dodson named 2009-2010 President-Elect of the Louisiana Association for Justice

Founding partner, Richard "Jerry" Dodson, was named 2009-2010 President-Elect of the Louisiana Association for Justice (LAJ) at the Association's annual meeting. Mr. Dodson will work with the current LAJ President and become President of the Association in September of 2010. The Louisiana Association for Justice is comprised of plaintiff and defense attorneys from throughout Louisiana who advocate for workplace justice, fairness in the courts and work to uphold the honor and dignity of the civil justice system and legal profession in Louisiana. Mr. Dodson will also be representing the association at the American Association for Justice's bi-annual winter meeting in Maui, Hawaii.

Dodson, Hooks & Frederick represents Elmer's Island Family against State of Louisiana

The firm was retained to represent the Elmer family against the State of Louisiana. The Elmers purchased and have possessed "Elmer's Island", a 3 mile private stretch of gulf front sand beach, for more than 30 years. For years the family charged a nominal fee for individuals to use the area for camping, fishing and general recreation until one of the family members drowned in an automobile accident on the road leading to the beach. Thereafter, the gates to the beach access road were locked. On July 4, 2009, without prior notice to the family, the State of Louisiana cut the locks and allowed public access to the road and private beach. The family seeks to be placed back into peaceful possession of their land. The case is pending in the 19th Judicial District Court in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Dodson, Hooks & Frederick represents victims of BPZ Energy, Inc. Tanker Explosion and Sinking

The firm was retained to represent the interests of those injured and killed as a result of the explosion and sinking of the M/V Super tanker off the coast of Peru. Several people were killed and many were seriously burned and injured in the incident. The United States publicly traded company BPZ Energy, Inc. is alleged to be responsible for the incident. The case is pending in state district court in Houston, Texas.

Dodson, Hooks & Frederick represent victims of Collapsed I-10 Twin Span Bridge

The firm was retained to represent the interests of the family of the construction foreman killed, and represent the other workers who were injured, in an industrial accident where a portion of the I-10 Twin Span Bridge collapsed. The Twin Spans crosses Lake Pontchartrain and connects New Orleans to St. Tammany Parish. The case is pending in the Civil District Court for the Parish of Orleans.

National class action attorney H. Price Mounger became affiliated with the firm. Price brings over 20 years of legal experience to the firm's international practice in environmental, toxic tort, product liability and personal injury litigation. Price is active with the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board serves as Chair of one the Board's hearing committees on attorney misconduct. Price is a 1988 graduate of the Paul M. Members of the Louisiana Democratic Party's governing body, the Democratic State Central Committee, elected Kenny Hooks as legal counsel for a four year term. As a newly appointed statewide officer, Mr. Hooks is also given a seat on the Louisiana Democratic Party's Executive Committee, the governing body that interacts with elected officials and guides endorsement decisions.

Dodson, Hooks and Frederick takes the lead in pursuing mental anguish claims on behalf of over fifty former patients of a longtime Lake Charles OBGYN. The physician was arrested on charges of alleged video voyeurism of patients during medical exams.

Jerry Dodson travels to Greece serving as a Professor of Maritime Law for Tulane Law School. On May 28, 2007, Mr. Dodson began instructing at the Aegean Institute of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law, located on the Greek Isle of Rhodes. As a Professor for Tulane's summer abroad program, Mr. Dodson is teaching courses in International Admiralty Law.

Attorney Richard (Jerry) Dodson recently spoke at a conference on Maritime Law held in the Ukraine. On May 23 - 24, 2007, Mr. Dodson lectured at the Odessa National Law Academy concerning Foreign Seafarers in United States Courts. The conference which was sponsored by The Aegean Institute of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law and Hellenic Foundation for Culture was attended by professors and students of the Law Academy, as well as by representatives from the Greek and Ukraine shipping industries.

Todd Everett Baumann v. D&J Fill, Inc., et. al. class certified

Attorney Kenny Hooks, partner with Dodson, Hooks and Frederick, along with attorney Steve Irving and Vincent Sotile, successfully argued to the Honorable Pegram Mire of the 23rd Judicial District Court for the certification of a class action which includes all individuals residing within two miles of D&J Fill's dump, located in Ascension Parish. D&J Fill's insurance lawyers have appealed the decision of the trial court. Trial on the merits is proposed for Fall of 2007.

Kenny Hooks leads a team of builders, architects, surveyors and investors in forming Jamestown at Old Perkins

Kenny Hooks, partner with Dodson, Hooks and Frederick, successfully led a team of builders, architects, surveyors and engineers in rezoning areas near the corner of the intersection of Pecue Lane and Perkins Road in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to form Jamestown at Old Perkins, Baton Rouge's largest planned urban development (PUD). Jamestown at Old Perkins consists of 4 phases of development, which include single and multi-family residential housing, commercial office buildings and commercial retail enterprises. Ground breaking on this site is scheduled for early September.

Attorney Kenny Hooks, partner with Dodson, Hooks and Frederick, was appointed to replace the position of Adjunct Law Professor left vacant when partner Jerry Dodson retired from the position after nearly thirty years of service. He will continue the firm's tradition of teaching courses in Admiralty and Maritime law.

Attorney Kenny Hooks, partner with Dodson Hooks and Frederick, along with attorney Steve Irving and Vincent Sotile, brought suit on behalf of various residents from Prairieville, Louisiana against D&J Fill, Inc. to rid the Ascension Parish community of the putrid odors emanating from the dump owned by D&J Fill, Inc.

Suit alleges Foreign Seaman Cheated Out of Wages by New Jersey Company

Jerry Dodson, along with New York Attorney, Ralph J. Mellusi, brought a class action lawsuit for unpaid wages of 209 foreign seaman who were illegally employed on board United States flagged vessels in violation of the Jones Act. Despite strenuous defense objections, a Federal Judge in Brooklyn granted class certification to the Polish and Filipino seamen finding that the putative class members claims rely on common legal theories arising from a common nucleus of facts. This case received national attention when Mark Fass published an article on May 31, 2007 in the New York Law Journal.
